Moderna’s influence in Australia grows.
NEW RESEARCH PARTNERSHIP
Australia’s national science agency, CSIRO, has entered a five-year “strategic research partnership” with U.S biotechnology company Moderna to “strengthen the country’s preparedness for future pandemics and biological threats”.
The collaboration, known as the CSIRO-Moderna Biosecurity Accelerator, aims to “bring together Australian scientific expertise” and Moderna’s mRNA technology to ‘improve the detection of emerging infectious diseases’ and accelerate development.
The partnership reflects Australia’s commitment to growing international efforts to ‘improve pandemic preparedness’ following the COVID-19 period.
Under the collaboration, CSIRO will “contribute expertise” in infectious disease research, laboratory science, and the investigation of ‘emerging biological threats’.
Moderna says it will bring its experience in mRNA technology, data science, and the development of vaccines and other medicines to Australia.
Researchers hope that combining CSIRO’s scientific capabilities with Moderna’s technology platform will help shorten the time required to move from identifying a ‘potential threat’, to developing and evaluating ‘an appropriate medical response’.
The partnership is expected to focus on identifying ‘emerging infectious diseases’, improving research into ‘potentially dangerous pathogens’, and accelerating the development of vaccines and other medical countermeasures.
The collaboration will “help strengthen Australia’s ability to respond to future infectious disease outbreaks”, including ‘threats’ that emerge elsewhere in the world.
For Australia, the agreement also builds on broader efforts to develop domestic vaccine manufacturing and research capabilities.
Moderna has previously established a separate arrangement to support mRNA vaccine manufacturing in Melbourne. That initiative provides the capacity to produce up to 100 million vaccine doses annually, strengthening Australia’s access to mRNA vaccines.
