One step closer to a cashless, biometric ‘experience’.
SCAN-AS-YOU-GO
Shoppers will now be able to scan their groceries at their trolley in an Australian-first technology trial at a Sydney Woolworths, it has been announced.
New ‘scan-and-go’ ‘smart carts’ are being trialled at a Woolworths in Windsor, with customers now able to scan items as they add them to their cart.

How does it work? Using the company’s existing Everyday Rewards card, customers can now opt for a touchscreen that clips onto the trolley and allows them to scan as they shop.
Customers still have to pay at the checkout, but the supermarket says as the ‘smart carts’ roll out, the model could eventually see them swipe their cards and pay at the trolley itself.

“The technology is co-created with one of our international partners and is home-grown in Australia, we’ve really been able to make sure it meets the Australian consumers needs,” Managing Director Faye Ihan said.

Woolworths says employees will conduct random checks of people shopping to make sure people don’t exploit the system to steal, and that the new system ‘won’t impact employment’.
This news comes 12 months after the chain introduced new AI surveillance measures at self-serve checkouts, sending an alarm when someone is suspected of shoplifting.
If the trial is successful, Woolworths says it will one day expand the ‘smart carts’ to all Australian stores.
The digital transformation of our supermarkets continues.
Yet another step towards the true end vision these organisations have for the future of shopping.
THE FUTURE OF SUPERMARKETS
Although many may simply see this measure as an evolution in retail practice, carrying on and ‘improving’ a practice that has been around for years, it is quite the opposite.
Those people aren’t looking at the bigger picture, or the stated plans Woolworths has for the future.
When it comes to checkouts, artificial intelligence will eventually phase out the need for checkouts all together, as supermarkets switch to biometric identification measures like the ones seen in Amazon Go stores across the United States. We broke this news in 2020 to the public:
The eventual plan is to have people sign up for an account (being trained with this new measure today), scan their faces, and instead of paying for their items when leaving the store at a checkout, the customer simply walks out and the camera recognises who they are — charging their account automatically.
Interesting that the timing of this goal is 2030. I’m sure that’s just a ‘coincidence’.
In a few years, there will barely be any staff left in supermarkets at all, as groups like Woolworths begin a shift to automated workforces. They are starting at distribution centres, and slowly move to stores.
Key logistics facilities in Sydney and Melbourne have already lost hundreds of employees during this transition so far, despite claims that technology ‘won’t impact jobs’.
Woolworths also trialled cashless payment systems at 11 CBD stores across these regions in 2020, announcing that these locations would not be accepting cash payments from customers.
And it’s not just Woolworths doing this. As we know, Coles is along for the dystopian ride themselves, introducing ‘smart gates’ that lock customers in the store, and ‘hybrid self-checkouts’.
This is a worldwide transition. Instacart, a U.S-based company, rolled out ‘Caper Carts’ earlier this year which use similar AI to identify items, their price and the weight of produce — and allow shoppers to “check out stress-free with a click on a touch screen”.

If people can’t see where this is going, then quite frankly, they are living with their head in the sand.
It has never been a more crucial time to disconnect yourselves from the big supermarket chains.

What could possibly go wrong? Might as well shop online that way you don’t have to be a volunteer worker for the supermarkets. Better still shop elsewhere, while you still can, there are many small businesses and farmers markets who love cash. My local organic shop delivers free if I spend over $130 (not hard to do these days) and if I do go to the store I use cash. Imagine if people boycotted these supermarkets. Our local IGA even gave up on self service cash register and they sit there idle, they employ local people and heaps of students get their first job with them.

For myself I use Self Serve every time I shop in Coles or Woolworths even BigW and Target only place not available is Foodland which is 20 mins by car because they are really good in having well stocked up shelves and items that Coles and Woolies dont have.
Self Serve uses Cameras it even detects what’s different in the trolley which normally the operator will delete and can finish off scanning the few items I have and then use my ANZ Debit Card to pay for it.
With a Smart Trolly as long does not have a camera and only a scanner that just scan your items as you shop and in the end just pay as usual and wheel the Smart Trolly through these electronic gates which Coles have at my local store. Then could be a good idea as long as the data what I buy stays on the trolly once I paid for it just deletes. Having that date go to the Australian Government who then may send it to the USA Corporation like the CIA then I will just use the Self Serve Service…
