Finally some progress, but is it enough?
CAMERA BAN
Australia will remove Chinese-made surveillance cameras from defence sites over national security fears.
It comes after an audit found surveillance equipment built by companies Hikvision and Dahua on many government estates.
Hikvision and Dahua are partly owned by China’s Communist Party-ruled government.
Australia has no way of knowing whether data collected by the devices is being handed over to Chinese intelligence agencies
The UK and US announced complete bans last year, citing fears the device data may be accessed by the Chinese government.
Defence Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Richard Marles on Thursday said the government would find and remove the cameras from any defence locations to make them “completely secure”.
“Where those particular cameras are found, they’re going to be removed.”
“I don’t think we should overstate the seriousness… but it’s a significant thing that’s been brought to our attention and we’re going to fix it,” he said, adding the devices pre-dated his time in office.
They act like Labor wasn’t in Parliament as opposition the entire time.
Shadow Minister for Cyber Security James Paterson says should not be supporting Hikvision and Dahua for “moral” reasons.
This is true, as both companies have been directly implicated in human rights abuses and mass surveillance of Uyghurs minority groups in Xinjiang.
Any free country should of cut ties with such a state many years ago.
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he was “unconcerned” about how the Chinese government might react to the move.
But the truth is these moves were really only considered when our allies made their moves.
This is despite the government knowing about this security threat since at least 2018.
The majority being found on government buildings, not included in this ban.
STILL NOT ENOUGH
We have warned here for years on TOTT News that Chinese surveillance cameras are a security threat.
In December, we published the following article calling for Australia to follow our allies:
At the time, ASIO boss Mike Burgess said:“…It’s an issue that perhaps someone should look into, but it’s not front of mind for me and my organisation at this point in time.”
Perhaps they realised how ill-advised that position was.
While this is a start, are defence sites really enough?
A 2018 audit of Australian government sites found the cameras and security gear were located on more than 200 buildings, in almost every department, including the Foreign Affairs and Attorney General’s departments.
In greater society, there are also hundreds of thousands of potential two-way surveillance tools.
You would think moves would have been made earlier to protect Australia from these threats.
However, it took them almost five years to do so, and it doesn’t include any government buildings just listed.
Yes, they will review if this decision should be made.
Once again the Australian government tip-toeing around genuine security threats as to not ‘upset China’.
Some might argue because we are importing a Chinese-style social credit system to our country.
Let’s also not forget that our universities are the ones developing these tools for the Communist regime:

So what will they be replaced with? Nearly all electronics are made in China or by China in another country.
Probably more Israeli ‘security’ systems.
A couple of thoughts come to mind. Firstly, who was stupid enough to install them in the first place ? Remember we have joint exercises here. The forces have immunity from possible violations of protocol so I understand.
Also why should the citizens of this country have cameras on them anywhere and everywhere they go ?
, Do you like your smart vacuum cleaner mapping your home TV relaying scenes from the bedroom and lounge., what about washing machines and fridges.and scarey devices that are in some babies rooms.?
Not to mention our wonderful phones.

Whether China’s surveillance is monitored by sources loyal to Xi or to Xi’s rival CCP Deep State faction, it’s still good news if we remove Chinese-controlled cameras. Leaving the supply of sensitive equipment to “market forces” obviously wasn’t such a good idea.
