RINEHART’S COMMENTS
Mining billionaire Gina Rinehart has ignited backlash after calling on the QLD government to offer free public land to Elon Musk’s SpaceX, as well as for Israeli defence manufacturers.
In her words, the suggestions form part of an ambitious plan to transform North Queensland into a “global centre for aerospace and military technology”.
Speaking at the Townsville Bush Summit, Rinehart argued Australia should adopt a “far more aggressive approach” to attracting international investment, claiming the nation’s vast land resources and strategic location were being “underutilised”.
Among her most controversial proposals was a suggestion that sparsely populated islands off the North Queensland coast be offered “at no cost” to Elon Musk for SpaceX satellite construction and rocket launch facilities.
Rinehart said Australia could provide the billionaire entrepreneur with land, infrastructure, and reliable water supplies – creating an “alternative launch location in an allied nation”, while “generating high-skilled engineering jobs” and “encouraging Australian graduates”.
She also proposed offering free land near Townsville or Prairie to Israeli defence companies, arguing Australia should encourage the development and manufacture of advanced military technologies – including drones and missile defence systems – on Australian soil.
Rinehart suggested ‘skilled Israeli engineers’ could be encouraged to relocate if necessary, with the resulting technologies manufactured locally and supplied to armed forces.
The proposals form part of a much broader vision for economic reform.
Rinehart called for lower taxes, reduced environmental regulation, the closure of several federal departments she described as “duplicating” state responsibilities, and a renewed focus on heavy industry and advanced manufacturing.
She also advocated attracting semiconductor manufacturers to North Queensland and argued Australia should compete internationally by offering incentives to industries.
The speech concluded with Rinehart presenting One Nation leader, Pauline Hanson, with an orange toy bulldozer – describing it as a symbol of cutting bureaucracy and regulation.
The gesture echoed recent political symbolism in the United States, where Elon Musk has publicly championed reducing government intervention.
While supporters praised the proposals, critics questioned both their practicality and their implications – including concerns a potential conflict of interest.
Let’s not forget that Hancock Prospecting recently announced a significant investment in SpaceX, leading opponents to argue that Rinehart stood to benefit financially if Australian governments provided favourable conditions to the company.
Critics suggest offering public land to a private enterprise that is linked to one of the world’s wealthiest individuals would require careful scrutiny and clear public justification.
Others objected to the principle of transferring or leasing publicly owned land at little or no cost, arguing that taxpayers should receive fair commercial value for strategic assets.
Environmental groups have also raised concerns about the possible impact of industrial development and rocket launch infrastructure on sensitive coastal ecosystems and islands.

The geopolitical stage is in a very unique spot at present, and what makes this development interesting is the link that Gina Rinehart has with Pauline Hanson – an individual who has witnessed a surge in popularity in the polls across Australia lately.
Pauline Hanson was recently gifted a private jet plane by Rinehart in April as the One Nation swell began to take off, as well as $2 million in donations from the billionaire’s friends.

If you asked Pauline, she would probably feel the same way about giving land to Israel, given she has been a staunch defender and advocate for the Middle Eastern state for many years.
For instance, Pauline wore an Israeli flag scarf in the senate in May 2024 as a “gesture of solidarity” with Israel and the Australian Jewish community. She was directed to remove or reverse it because parliamentary rules prohibit political displays.
She has repeatedly condemned Hamas and shown strong opposition to Australian recognition of a Palestinian state until “Israel’s security is guaranteed”.
Hanson worked to adopt the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism in Australian politics, arguing it would strengthen responses to ‘antisemitism’.
In addition, she worked to support recognising Jerusalem as Israel’s capital and to move Australia’s embassy there, a position she and her party advocated.
The One Nation leader has also repeatedly praised Benjamin Netanyahu on several occasions, including defending his government’s position on the Israel-Hamas con-flick and supporting his criticism of the Australian government’s policy.
In other words, Pauline is a big supporter of Israel.
Just like her buddy, Gina Rinehart.
Which doesn’t fare too well for them, because the rest of Australia does not feel the same.
Just recently, major international survey has found that Australians of all ages are the most likely in the developed world to hold unfavourable views of Israel – outranking the U.S and U.K – and reflecting a wider shift seen across politics and media.
