THE SATELLITE EXPERIMENT
Satellite “megaconstellations” have become more common in recent years, led by companies such as SpaceX, who are attempting to cover the sky with these giant structures.
Researchers have warned the scale of these activities may amount to an “unregulated global experiment” on Earth’s atmosphere, as concern grows over the environmental impact of constant rocket launches and satellite re-entries.

The debate has intensified as the number of satellites in low Earth orbit has risen sharply in recent years. Industry estimates suggest there are now more than 15,000 operational satellites in orbit, compared with roughly 5,000 in 2020.
Yes, the amount of satellites in our skies has tripled in just half a decade.
Much of that growth has been driven by SpaceX’s Starlink network, which already operates thousands of satellites and plans to expand to provide ‘global broadband internet coverage’.
Scientists say the concern is not simply the growing number of satellites, but the cumulative atmospheric effects created by launching, operating, and disposing of them.
Researchers are particularly focused on pollution produced by rocket exhaust. Unlike emissions from aircraft or cars, rocket emissions are released directly into the upper atmosphere, including the stratosphere, where pollutants can remain for much longer.

One of the main concerns is black carbon soot generated by kerosene-fuelled rockets, such as the Falcon 9. Researchers believe these particles absorb heat efficiently and may contribute disproportionately to atmospheric temperature changes.
Some researchers have warned that increasing launch activity could alter atmospheric chemistry in ways that are not yet fully understood.
Another growing area of concern involves satellites burning up during re-entry.
Most low Earth orbit satellites are intentionally deorbited at the end of their operational lives, causing them to disintegrate in the atmosphere. During this process, satellites release metallic particles and chemical compounds, including aluminium oxide, known as alumina.
Atmospheric scientists are current studying whether these materials could damage or influence the movement of heat and radiation through the atmosphere.

Some have described these concerns as akin to an “unregulated geoengineering experiment”. The comparison to geoengineering refers not to any deliberate attempt to alter the climate – although we can’t be sure – but to the possibility that large-scale human activity in space could unintentionally affect atmospheric systems on a planetary scale.

Researchers stress that the science remains uncertain, and are highlighting how the pace of commercial expansion is far exceeding the speed of scientific research and regulation.
Existing international space regulations were largely developed during an era when launches were relatively infrequent, and satellite numbers were modest.
Current rules focus mainly on launch safety, orbital coordination, and communications licensing, rather than long-term environmental effects.
Environmental groups are now calling for more comprehensive monitoring of rocket emissions and satellite re-entry pollution, alongside international standards governing the environmental impact of commercial space activity.

The issue extends beyond atmospheric science, too.
Astronomers have also raised concerns about the effect of megaconstellations on observations of the night sky – something I can relate with.
The amount of times I have looked up and witnessed one of Space X’s ugly satellite formations cruising across the sky is enough to make you vomit.

Bright satellite trails can interfere with telescope imaging, while radio transmissions from satellites may disrupt sensitive astronomical instruments.
Despite these concerns, supporters of satellite megaconstellations argue that the technology delivers ‘major economic and humanitarian benefits’.
Services such as Starlink have provided internet access in remote communities, disaster zones and conflict areas, where satellite communications have previously been limited.
This includes the Australian outback, which make up the bulk of Musk’s customers here.
But is all of that worth it for uncertain, long-term environmental consequences?
And beyond that, Musk’s satellites are not only causing all of these problems, but may the foundation for a technological grid only imagined in dystopian nightmares.

THE DEEPER PICTURE

Further research on the impacts of megaconstellations has found that when orbiting Earth, the Sun’s rays are reflected off them and scattered into the atmosphere.

One megaconstellation has been observed to produce up to 19 parallel streaks across the sky, just to give you an idea of how prevalent these satellites are.

But beyond these concerns, there is a deeper picture associated with this push.
One that will lead to the total control of humanity in ways we cannot imagine.
It has to do with the planetary grid that is being set up as a result of these satellites – connectivity that will help power the merging of man and machine.
In 2020, it was announced that SpaceX was coming to Australia, after being approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) to bid for internet contracts.

Starlink is lobbying to prevent changes to the allocation of the 12GHz spectrum in the U.S, with the Federal Communications Commission proposed opening up the frequency band (currently used for space-based services) for more widespread use on Earth for 5G mobile.
Why are they doing this?
In one word: Skynet.
Skynet is a sentient defence supercomputer created by Cyberdyne Systems in the movie Terminator. After achieving self-awareness, it famously identified humanity as its greatest threat, launched a nuclear holocaust (“Judgment Day”), and waged a war of extinction.

Medical implants have already been proven to be controlled remotely, and with the merging of an all-encompassing satellite internet grid – owning both the telco and infrastructure – and control of the AI systems themselves, things can get out of hand really quick.
