DIGITAL ID HAS ARRIVED

Australia’s long-envisioned national Digital ID program is almost upon us, with the federal government’s Big Brother framework will go live in a matter of weeks.

The underpinning legislation will take effect on 1 December 2024, with the program to follow soon after.

The building blocks are almost complete, and here are the latest moves ahead of the launch.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) is enhancing its cybersecurity capabilities throughout FY25 as part of a broader strategy to improve compliance and maturity in line with the Australian Cyber Security Centre’s Essential Eight framework.

The initiative addresses the ACCC’s expanding regulatory role within Australia’s cybersecurity landscape, particularly with the launch of the national anti-scam centre and digital ID.

Known as the “Trust Exchange”, it is part of the Trusted Digital Identity Framework, which is designed to securely verify people’s identities using digital tokens.

As always, the bill was pushed through with little-to-no-debate in typical dystopian fashion, a hallmark we have seen with other landscape-shifting pieces of legislation, such as anti-terrorism bills.

Earlier this year, in a speech to the National Press Club in Canberra, Federal Minister for Government Services Bill Shorten called the new digital ID system “world leading”.

But is it really? Or, as is usually the case, is this plan riddled with fundamental threats to privacy?

Yes, you guessed it, it’s the latter. The scheme already has several privacy issues, especially when compared to international standards like those in the European Union.

Despite this, Digital ID credentials will be integrated into the Australia’s government services app, myGov, which we have warned will be the centralised hub for years on the website.

The government is planning to make the app a one-stop shop for government services, and at present, passkeys (which will be assigned to each citizen) are soon to be accredited with ID credentials.

And, so there is no confusion between myGov (the regular services app) and myGovID (Digital ID credentials to log in), the process will undergo a makeover and be renamed “myID” from mid-November.

myID will be the biometric barrier that stops those who do not wish to submit their personal details to a central database from accessing government services like tax, Medicare and Centrelink.

Slowly, over time, biometric identification (your ID passkeys) will be the only way to gain access to many facets of modern life, in an ever-increasing digital world.

And it all goes live next month, folks. What a time to be alive.

But here’s the thing: This is only the first step towards a world that even Orwell couldn’t conjure in his mind when writing Nineteen Eighty-Four. The Thought Police of today are much more sophisticated.

JUST THE FIRST STEP

As we all know, this has been a long time in the making. And to achieve the final vision, will still have a way to go. In the same way we have warned on many things before they happen, now we do so again.

For you see, Digital ID is just the first step of the plan, as more transformations integrate slowly to form an all-encompassing digital dystopia.

Take for instance how the federal government has almost spent $10 million to roll out a ‘National Skills Passport’ that will ‘assist jobseekers to streamline their employment’ online.

Through a centralised ‘digital resume’, all employers will be able to access this information through a portal, eliminating the task of manually submitting resumes for job applications.

While this seems like a more ‘convenient step’, it is just one example of how other ‘advancements’ in society will merge with the Digital ID philosophy, and likely the system itself.

And now that the masses are back on board, the business world has also followed suit, including the banking sector — an industry that has jumped at the opportunity to introduce their own systems.

Digital ID is not just government, it will also be the corporations that rule our very lives too.

Yet, the warp-speed digitalisation of our economies and societies has created huge vulnerabilities for the future, as July’s worldwide IT outage demonstrated.

From data breaches, to identity theft, the digital realm is far from secure. Yet the government is pushing forward without blinking an eye, and it makes you think ‘why?’.

It’s because they are going well beyond Digital ID as a means to securely access services, to a means of totalitarian control of the highest order.

Let me explain: We just looked at how the employment sector has introducing Digital ID-type ‘passports’, but underpinning this is be social credit system-type ‘points’ that jobseekers must ‘achieve’ every month.

Do you see what I’m getting at here?

We also just spoke on how banks are set to introduce Digital ID. Know what else they are introducing? Centralised digital currencies.

The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) has already established use cases for a central bank digital currency (CBDC), saying they hope to “determine the economic benefits”.

It all links together, and in the next few decades, the social credit system overlay will finally hit the west, as digital id, digital currencies and digital surveillance all merge together to usher in total control.
