Beekeepers to be under further surveillance.
VARROA SAGA EXPANDS
State and federal governments, as well as beekeeping and pollination industry ‘representatives’, have unanimously agreed to usher in a new phase of “biosecurity management” for Varroa mite.
The NSW government recently welcomed the decision of the Varroa Mite National Management Group (NMG) to approve the National Transition to Management Plan (T2M).
A Varroa mite Control Order is now in place, meaning there is now two control zones in NSW, the Suppression (SCZ) and Management (MCZ) Control Zones.
Beekeepers are required to notify NSW DPI of movements from the MCZ to the SCZ, and to conduct surveillance on their own hives.
Under the order, beekeepers are also now required to use approved treatment protocols to treat hives which reach a “minimum infestation threshold”.
The federal, state and territory governments, and 16 industries, have committed to share up to $100 million of the costs of the response to date and “transition to management activities”.
As a Category 2 Emergency, the contributions are 40% (up to $40 million) from the Australian government, 40% (up to $40 million) from state and territory governments, and 20% (up to $20 million) shared across 16 industry groups.
The recruitment process for new roles under the plan is currently underway and the NSW Government will immediately recruit Varroa Development Officers (VDOs) who ‘work directly with beekeepers’ to ‘increase their ability to manage Varroa’.
Another role of the VDOs will be to “develop, train and maintain a network of volunteer beekeepers” who will “monitor hives for the presence of Varroa and provide information on the spread of the mite”.
Additionally, the response will employ a Pollination Industry Coordinator (PIC) to “assist the pollination dependent industries to better understand and manage their needs”.
Minister for Agriculture, the Hon. Tara Moriarty said:
“The NSW government is prepared and will immediately roll out resources, information, support and training for our beekeepers and pollination reliant agriculture sectors to address this new biosecurity transition.”
The aim of the Transition to Management Plan is designed, they say, to “…increase resilience and minimise ongoing impacts of Varroa mite for the bee industry and pollination reliant industries”.
But beekeepers themselves, away from the bought-and-paid-for industry ‘representatives’, as well as Saves the Bees Australia, have been calling out the reckless euthanasia strategy since it began.
Many have suspected there is lots of ‘funny business’ going on here.
A targeted attack on one of our most important biodiversity-stabilising creatures.
EUTHANASIA PROGRAM
The NSW government’s Department of Primary Industries (NSW DPI) first reported the detection of the the Varroa mite parasites in biosecurity surveillance hives of the Port of Newcastle in June 2022.
In the process, tens of millions of bees have been euthanised in an attempt to ‘control the parasite’ since it was first detected.
TOTT News reported on beekeepers calling for the NSW government to end mass culling of bees across the state, with officers showing up at doors and gassing entire hives with little notice.
The NSW Department of Primary Industries expanded the eradication zone a further 10 kilometres following more detection in December 2022.
The red zone expansion encompasses 80 more sites and 650 more hives, a spokesperson said.
But this wasn’t the end.
In an attempt to bate wildbees with the mite, authorities began poisoning other indigenous bees with these techniques. Save The Bees Australia officially stepped in to oppose the moves and call for an immediate halt to the open bating technique, launching a petition.
The NMG made the decision in late 2023 that Varroa mite was no longer eradicable from Australia after commencing the national program for eradication in July 2022.
Now, a dystopian biosecurity order will loom for the indefinite future?
There is no timeline on how long this will remain in place.
And people are absolutely correct to have suspicions about this, with critics citing that this could have been prevented from the very beginning.
There are many alternatives to controlling varroa mite that didn’t include euthanasia, and the government’s lack of communication and planning with the strategy is destroying producers.
For example, beekeepers can use an integrated pest management (IPM) approach as a solution, in which they use several different mite control techniques in combination or in rotation throughout the year.

There are also ways of reducing reproduction rates in populations of infected hives.
Outside of the IPM approach, biologists in the United States have developed new ways to “toughen up bees” to be able to withstand mite outbreaks in areas where they commonly occur:
Of course, these methods aren’t as effective as an outright killing of the bees themselves, but the alternatives highlight a need for a delicate balance when dealing with these situations.
This control order is now an attempt to do so, but it is far too late.
And at the cost of tens of millions of bees here in Australia.

This is such a tragic situation. I find it hard to believe that this mite is so dangerous, it is apparently easy to control and there was no need to murder bees and destroy hives. I heard that Big Almond was allowed to transport bees in the midst of all this risking spreading to other states. Seems to me this is “funny business” if you control bees you control food production therefore control the industry. Another push to get rid of small time farmers? And will these VDO’s etc be paid heaps to spread misinformation and try to tell beekeepers how to do things without sufficient expertise?
Looks like another effort by “our” criminal governments to get rid of small operators. When their dumb efforts to try to control this mite didn’t work, instead of abandoning them, they double down on their lunacy. This is typical of authoritarian/totalitarian-wannabe governments, which we are now saddled with in Australia…governments which love taking “cides”, including democide for people…and now “beecide”.
As far as I am concerned the government’s action in this case is more bungling because they are so inept at their job. Shouldn’t beekeepers have a say in this? Using hard/synthetic compounds to combat this mite is no good for bees’ health and no good for our health either. I am sure this mite has been around on this planet since day one and now that we have it here we need to up the health of the bee hives and maybe if there was less spraying of toxic chemicals on agriculture the bees would have a superior immune system. I wonder too, is there another agenda to this whole thing?
So true Jan, over 100,000 chemicals have been introduced to man and the environment, mostly without proper safety or long term effect studies. Many incidences including viruses are actually chemical poisoning. Remember Zika for example? Weather is also being effected by the poison they are dropping in the air. Nature and health of everything is all out of balance thanks to the money making machine of the chemical industry.

Was the Covid 19 Plandemic that held container ships away from the docks which caused the supply chain issue is this what caused the varroa mite to cause a decline with the honeybees. Now they are in Australia there is an actual safe solution to kill these mites. What is actually going on is the culling of the Honeybees are we seeing something else from WEFs Great Reset Playbook..
