PESTICIDE LIMIT INCREASE
Australian regulators are facing growing scrutiny over a proposal to significantly increase permitted residue limits for the insecticide isocycloseram on several berry crops.

The Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) is reviewing changes to maximum residue limits for the chemical, which is used to control insect pests.
The proposed adjustments would allow higher levels of isocycloseram residues on berries, including raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, currants, strawberries, and cranberries.
The plan has attracted attention because of the scale of the increases. Critics have highlighted figures showing that permitted residue levels could rise substantially for some crops, including increases of up to several hundred times current limits for certain berries.
Environmental organisations, health advocates, and concerned consumers have raised objections, arguing that the changes warrant greater scrutiny because isocycloseram is associated with PFAS chemicals.
PFAS compounds have attracted international attention because some are highly persistent in the environment and can remain for long periods.
Opponents of the proposal say regulators should apply a precautionary approach when assessing chemicals with potential persistence concerns. They argue that increasing allowable residues on foods commonly promoted as healthy choices, particularly those eaten by children, requires careful consideration of long-term exposure risks.

Critics have also questioned whether pesticide assessments rely sufficiently on independent scientific research, arguing that greater transparency around evidence and decision-making processes would help maintain public confidence.
The APVMA has defended its assessment process, stating that maximum residue limits are not safety thresholds, but regulatory standards designed to reflect the expected residues resulting from ‘approved pesticide use’.

The authority says food safety assessments consider toxicological data and exposure estimates, with safety margins applied to protect consumers.
While regulators emphasise ‘scientific risk assessments’ and ‘exposure limits’, many members of the public remain concerned about cumulative exposure to chemicals and the environmental consequences of persistent substances.
A key point of disagreement is the difference between hazard and risk.
Critics focus on the potential characteristics of the chemical itself, including concerns about persistence, while regulators focus on the level of exposure consumers are expected to receive through food and whether that exposure remains within safety parameters.

The APVMA’s review comes at a time of increasing public attention on pesticide use, food standards, and the management of chemicals in the environment.

We are being duped constantly and poisoned constantly. Always new non-organic berries were a real problem, they always look so nice in the supermarkets but I cannot bring myself to buy them. The safest way to eat them is from your own garden.
No wonder there is so much chronic illness and cancer. I believe most of our maladies are from environmental insults and vaccines. We are poisoning our own nest. This is just pure greed by chemical and big pharma companies with the regulatory bodies bowing down to them because they are either too weak or being funded by the same. They are killing us slowly bit by bit.
