Changes to definitions incoming?
GM REGULATORY CHANGES
Australia’s regulatory body for food, Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ), has recently approved updated definitions for genetically modified produce.
Following an extensive review, the GM definitions included in the Australia and New Zealand Food Standards Code have ‘been modernised’ to “address advances in gene technologies”.

As part of the changes, the process-based definition for ‘food produced using gene technology’ is being replaced with an outcome-based definition for ‘genetically modified food’ – which is based on the introduction of ‘novel DNA’ in an organism or cells.
Significantly, foods made using new breeding techniques like genome editing will not be classified as GM food if the genetic change doesn’t introduce novel DNA.
This is because they believe new techniques are “reasonably safe”.

The new definitions are designed to ‘remove ambiguity’ and ‘improve clarity and predictability’, while ‘continuing to protect public health and safety’, FSANZ said.
“The updated definitions are outcome-based, focusing on the change that has been made rather than the process used to make the change,” Dr Sandra Cuthbert said.
However, the decision has already drawn fire from special interest groups.
Australian Organics Ltd has objected to the FSANZ decision, issuing the following statement:
“The Australian organic industry is calling on state and federal food ministers to reject Food Standards Australia and New Zealand’s Proposal P1055”, they said.
“…The plan would strip consumers of their right to know whether the food they eat has been genetically modified (GM) or gene-edited.”
This shift could also help to ‘unlock’ even more GM foods in Australia, including a new application by a company to grow and sell genetically modified purple tomatoes.

In 2023, after being submitted to regulators, Australia became the first country to approve the world’s first GM bananas. This new change may allow more like this to come through.

The approval now moves to Australian and New Zealand federal ministers responsible for food safety, who have 60 days to consider FSANZ’s decision.
I won’t hold my breath to see a rejection of these changes, as the GM lobby here in Australia has been particularly effective at tearing down the walls of protection in recent years.
The synthetic takeover of our food, soil, plants, seeds and more – all by calculated design.
THE GM TAKEOVER
The normalisation of GM techniques has been calculated and cunning.
The Australian government deregulated CRISPR gene-editing methods for numerous products at the end of 2019, in a move experts said threatened organic production.
Not long after, states would follow, like the South Australian government lifting their long-standing ban on genetically modified crops beginning in 2020.
In 2021, New South Wales lifted their 18-year moratorium on genetically modified crops across the region, in a move welcomed by the state’s peak farming body.
Since then, Australia has witnessed a GM infiltration of the marketplace across the country.
Earlier this year, the NZ government also ended the country’s near 30-year ban on GM organisms outside of a lab, with legislation passed following a committee review.
But it isn’t just the GM foods themselves where this radical line is being drawn.
The GM lobby is threatening to completely transform the very fundamentals of nature itself.
This includes a campaign to alter everything, such as the introduction of edited soil microbes, ‘smart seeds’, ‘smart plants’, lab-grown food, and more.
Nothing is safe in this era of de-regulation and advancement of GM techniques, and with any potential alterations of definitions, the Frankenstein Floodgates will open even more.
Why does Australia seem so intent on heading down this path?
What will the future of our produce hold in this GM nightmare?
We shall await and see where it all goes.
