POPULATION ALTERATION
Australia will soon face a significant demographic turning point, with annual deaths projected to exceed births by the 2060s as fertility rates fall and the population ages.

The shift, outlined in the Federal Government’s 2026 Intergenerational Report, is expected to slow population growth and increase pressure on healthcare, aged care and the workforce – although migration is projected to ‘sustain’ population growth.

Australia’s fertility rate has been declining for decades, reflecting a broader trend across many developed economies. The latest government projections suggest the total fertility rate could fall to 1.34 children per woman by 2065-66 – well below the replacement level of approximately 2.1 children per woman.
The replacement rate is the average number of children women would need to have for a population to replace itself over time, in the absence of migration.
When fertility remains below this level, successive generations tend to be smaller, contributing to slower population growth over the long term.
Australians are increasingly having children later in life and, on average, having smaller families – if they can even have them at all.
These patterns affect not only the number of babies born today, but also the size of future generations of potential parents.
At the same time, Australia’s population is ageing. As large generations move into older age groups, the number of deaths is expected to increase, even as improvements in healthcare and living standards allow Australians to live longer.
The number of people aged 85 and over is projected to rise substantially by 2065-66, increasing demand for medical services, aged care, and other forms of support.
Together, declining fertility and population ageing are expected to reduce natural population growth until deaths eventually exceed births during the 2060s.
The forecast represents a significant change in Australia’s demographic outlook.
It also brings the country closer to patterns already seen in several other advanced economies, including Japan, Germany, and Italy.

A relatively smaller share of the population may be of traditional working age, raising questions about labour supply, productivity, tax revenue, and how care will be funded.

Despite the projected natural population decline, however, Australia’s total population is expected to continue growing. ‘How’, do you ask? Migration.
The 2026 Intergenerational Report forecasts a population of 39.3 million by 2065-66, with net overseas migration remaining the most important contributor.

As we have explored, the ultimate ‘solution’ to declining fertility rates in the rest is the IVF ‘revolution’ – and the Brave New World that awaits humanity.
