MRNA MICRONEEDLE PATCHES
Australian scientists are helping to push forward a new generation of vaccine technology that could one day make typical needle injections a thing of the past: dissolvable mRNA patches that ‘deliver’ vaccines through the skin using microscopic needles.
Researchers are investigating ways to combine mRNA technology with existing dissolvable microneedle patches, in a union straight out of science fiction nightmares.
The approach aims to create a “simple, more convenient way to administer vaccines” while also “addressing one of the major challenges of modern vaccination programmes”, including storage, distribution, and fear of traditional injections.
The technology uses ‘patches’ covered with hundreds of tiny “projections”, often referred to as microneedles. When applied to the skin, these microscopic ‘structures’ penetrate only the outer layers and then dissolve, releasing vaccine material into the body.
Unlike normal vaccines, the process does not require a conventional needle and syringe.
A focus for researchers is ‘protecting’ the mRNA molecules during the manufacturing and storage process. mRNA is naturally fragile and can lose its effectiveness if exposed to unsuitable conditions.
Scientists are developing methods to stabilise the mRNA and the lipid nanoparticles that carry it, allowing them to be incorporated into patch formats.
Australian researchers, including teams linked with RMIT University, have contributed to studies examining how these mRNA vaccine components can be preserved when dried into patch-based delivery systems.
International collaborations have also involved researchers from leading institutions in the United States, including MIT and Harvard Medical School.
Scientists say the potential ‘benefits’ of the technology are “significant”.
A successful mRNA patch could make vaccination easier to deliver across the world, especially in locations where maintaining ultra-cold storage facilities and transporting medical equipment can be difficult.
Researchers are also exploring whether mRNA nanopatch platforms could be adapted for a range of diseases, allowing vaccines to be developed and delivered ‘more efficiently’.
Dissolvable mRNA patches are not yet available as a medical product – but they are coming.
In the future, the entire system of vaccination will change towards a model of scalable nanopatches delivered with an mRNA foundation.
A new era of micro-injections, delivered via ultrasounds and other dystopian methods, will move to replace traditional vaccines for a range of diseases.
Concepts that were once only seen in TV shows like Star Trek are now becoming a reality.
THE FUTURE OF VACCINES
Instead of requiring a visit to a clinic for an injection, future vaccine campaigns will likely involve applying a small patch that ‘delivers’ medicine in a ‘minimally invasive’ way.
Australia has a strong history in needle-free vaccine research.
Scientists at the University of Queensland previously developed the nanopatch concept, which uses microscopic ‘projections’ to deliver vaccines through the skin.
That work helped demonstrate the potential of skin-based vaccination approaches and has contributed to broader research into microneedle vaccine systems.
In 2020, during lockdowns, University of Sydney researchers were awarded $1.12 million in funding to undertake clinical studies into needle-free vaccine delivery for ‘at-risk groups’.

To create a needle-free vaccine, scientists mix vaccine molecules with tiny, cup-shaped molecules made of the concoction, ready to be ‘delivered’ to the body.
But just how is this liquid ‘delivered’?
Today, researchers have discovered these patches can be delivered through the skin using ultrasound – a method that ‘eliminates painful needles’.
Researchers at the University of Oxford applied a liquid vaccine mixture to the skin of mice and exposed it to ultrasound – like that used for sonograms – to achieve the results.
Scientists have also even suggested that the light emitting from a smartphone device could also act as a ‘delivery’ method – and even worse, could allow for an invisible ‘tattoo’ pattern made up of minuscule “quantum dots” to be included.
Think I am making this up?
An article published by Rice University on the findings described the tattoo-method as tiny semiconducting crystals that reflect light – glowing under infrared light.
Dissolvable needles, pushed through the skin by ultrasound or smartphone, delivering biometric ‘barcode’ markets inside of the person that can be used to store information…
