A threat to the planet and humanity.
DATA CENTRES IN AUSTRALIA
Australia is rapidly emerging as a major hub for artificial intelligence infrastructure, with billions of dollars being committed to new data centres to support the growing demand.
However, the scale of these developments is prompting increasing debate over their impact on electricity networks, water resources, and local communities.

The centrepiece of Australia’s AI infrastructure push is a proposed “hyperscale campus” at Eastern Creek in Western Sydney.
Developed by NEXTDC, in partnership with OpenAI, the project is expected to cost around $7 billion and could eventually provide up to 550 megawatts of computing capacity – making it one of the largest AI-focused facilities in the Southern Hemisphere.

The site is intended to host a large-scale GPU supercluster capable of supporting advanced AI models and sovereign Australian computing capability.
The Eastern Creek development is part of a broader wave of investment concentrated in Sydney and Melbourne. In Victoria, NEXTDC has also announced a A$2 billion AI-focused technology campus at Fishermans Bend in Melbourne.

The project includes an “AI Factory”, described as a “mission-critical operations centre and technology hub aimed at supporting research, manufacturing, and defence applications”.
Several other major projects have also been announced. New facilities are planned or under construction in Horsley Park, Minchinbury, and Norwest in Western Sydney.

NEXTDC has also announced a USD $200 million investment to construct a second data centre on the Sunshine Coast, designated as SC2, which will serve as the region’s first dedicated ‘AI Factory’.

Meanwhile, operators including Goodman Group, AirTrunk, and Macquarie Data Centres are expanding their footprints to meet surging demand from cloud providers and AI companies.
Supporters argue these projects are “essential” if Australia is to remain competitive in the global race for artificial intelligence. They point to potential benefits including investment, construction jobs, technological capability, and greater ‘data sovereignty’.
Advocates also argue that local AI infrastructure reduces dependence on overseas computing resources and improves security for government, defence, and enterprise users.

Yet concerns are growing alongside the industry’s expansion.
One of the biggest issues is electricity consumption. AI data centres require enormous amounts of power to operate and cool thousands of high-performance processors.
Industry forecasts suggest data centre electricity demand could increase sharply over the coming decades, placing additional pressure on Australia’s energy system as it attempts to transition towards renewable generation in the suicidal ‘net zero’ race.

Environmental groups have warned that some proposed facilities could consume as much electricity as a regional city. Critics argue that governments have not yet developed adequate policies to manage the sector’s rapid growth and ensure new demand is matched.

Water usage has emerged as another contentious issue.
Many data centres rely on large volumes of water for cooling, leading to concerns about long-term impacts on urban water supplies, particularly during periods of drought. Forecasts suggest data centre demand could account for a significant share of Sydney’s future water consumption, with critics calling for greater scrutiny of proposed developments.

Local communities have also raised objections.
Residents living near existing or proposed facilities have expressed concerns about industrial-scale buildings being located close to homes, citing noise from cooling systems, increased traffic, visual impacts, and pressure on local infrastructure.
The debate has become particularly pronounced in Western Sydney, with community groups and environmental advocates calling for stricter regulation and more comprehensive assessments of impacts before additional approvals are granted.
For Australia, the question is no longer whether large-scale AI infrastructure will be built, but how its economic benefits can be balanced against sustainability and affordability.
As investment accelerates, that debate is likely to become one of the defining policy issues of the country’s emerging AI era – and we are all seemingly along for the rise.
Billionaires and digital tycoons are reshaping the world in their own image, without a shed of concern for the implications of such a revolutionary technology.
The AI takeover of society and the planet is arriving.
THE AI TAKEOVER
The controversy currently witnessed in Australia reflects a broader challenge facing governments around the world, including the U.S, U.K, and more.
AI is increasingly viewed as a strategic technology requiring substantial investment in digital infrastructure. However, the physical requirements of that infrastructure – including land, power, water, and transmission capacity – is creating tensions with locations impacted.

In the U.S, residents California became the first to vote on a permanent ban on data centres on Tuesday, with the results indicating a growing battle for prohibition.

In Australia, activists and organisations such as Green Peace have started similar action groups – and we should anticipate seeing protests beginning on our shores.

But they will be up against a government who is completely on board with AI advancements in Australia, as our region looks to become a ‘Pacific leader’ in the technology.
In 2023, Microsoft expanded its support for national cyber security systems and cloud computing services across Australia, after announcing the injection of $5 billion into the domestic marketplace. This partnership was designed to help us ‘seize the AI era’.

AI adoption is now everywhere, and is growing with each passing day.
To give you an idea of the scale, 41% of small and medium enterprises in Australia are actively incorporating AI, according to government’s AI Adoption Tracker released in 2025.

A broader Australian business survey cited in the National AI Centre’s ecosystem report found 52% of all businesses had adopted AI, with larger firms tending to be more likely.

The trend is growing with each and every passing year, and so do the threats as well.
As we recently explored, digital monitoring tools are increasingly being used in workplaces to track online activity, measure productivity, and analyse employee behaviour at scale.
Now, with advancements in AI being incorporated into these programs, the systems are now influencing hiring, firing, and redundancy decisions.

More broadly, AI systems are being incorporated into the world’s most advanced military systems, including in the United States and other major powers.
In July 2025, Anthropic announced a contract with the U.S. Department of Defense worth up to $200 million to prototype and deploy frontier AI capabilities for national security applications. Claude models were adapted for government and classified-network use.

Since then, public reports detail a dispute between Anthropic and the Pentagon over safeguards on Claude, particularly around autonomous weapons and surveillance.
The disagreement has escalated into legal and policy conflicts, with reports suggesting the Pentagon sought to restrict or replace Anthropic’s technology in some contexts.

All of this, as explored earlier, is powered by massive data centres.
None of it is possible without them.
And, if you think our facilities are bad, wait until you see what OpenAI is trying to achieve with the ‘Stargate’ program – a multi-billion dollar infrastructure behemoth.

Indeed, the world is changing very fast, ladies and gentlemen.
Now is the time to stand up before these monstrosities end up all over Australia.
We know of the environmental vandalism caused by massive solar farms and renewable energy scams, and this will be magnitudes worse in scale.
It is not only a threat to our water and land, but also to our privacy and freedom.
Nobody voted for this, yet the ball is now rolling.
Stand up for your future, folks.

So, this doesn’t exactly fit in with ‘net zero’ does it. So, in one breath they are preaching the getting rid of fossil fuels because apparently they are heating the earth (NOT) and causing CO2 levels to rise and that we must all consume less electricity and in the next breath, they are telling us we must have these huge data centres that will not run on wind turbines or solar power but use gas or electricity from the grid which will have to be fossil fuel as that is the cheapest and most reliable. Talk about a contradiction. Of course we all know that these are here for the surveillance of the population and to keep us controlled with digital I.D.s and CBDCs and 15 minute cities, because the countryside will be full of these AI behemoths and there will be no land left for us or nature. This planet will end up like Mars because in their stupidity they are quickly wrecking it. This is all to keep the billionaire psychopaths making more money and having more control of the people’s of this world. I suspect that they think AI is their saviour and that they will integrate with it and have everlasting life on earth, because deep down they are absolutely terrified of their own mortality. Of course while this is going on there are thousands of homeless people who have nowhere to sleep and little money if any to get food. We have a housing shortage and yet we bring more into the country and Albo gets a pay rise which is more than a pensioner gets for the whole year. Apparently he can’t live on $600,000, poor soul. Do we really need to be wasting all this money on this nonsense? Oh, of course I forgot, we need to win the AI race, after the US though.
Well said, Jan. That’s right, these monstrosities form a key component of the digital prison. Were Australians ever asked if we wanted this?
