The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has come under scrutiny after it was recently uncovered the agency halted or delayed publication of several internal studies examining the safety of COVID-19 and shingles vaccines.
According to reporting first highlighted by The New York Times and later confirmed by Reuters, FDA officials prevented researchers from publishing the findings.
The unpublished studies reportedly involved an analysis of millions of patient records collected through federal vaccine safety monitoring systems.
Researchers examined potential adverse effects linked to COVID-19 vaccines, as well as Shingrix, the widely used shingles vaccine manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline.
Sources familiar with the work told media outlets that publication plans were reportedly halted by senior officials within the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS).
In addition, some papers and conference abstracts linked to shingles vaccine research were allegedly withdrawn before presentation at scientific meetings.
The revelations have prompted widespread discussion, with critics arguing that suppressing or delaying peer-reviewed research risks undermining transparency in programmes.
In a statement, HHS defended the decision, arguing that the papers “…drew broad conclusions that were not supported by the underlying data”.
In other words, claims of injury and harm that didn’t fit the official ‘safe and effective’ narrative being pushed by government departments and health authorities.
Scientists interviewed by Reuters and other outlets said the studies ‘appeared to follow standard epidemiological methods commonly used in vaccine surveillance research’.
Indeed, the cherry-picking and corruption with trial data is very well known – so I am not surprised this type of thing is just ‘standard procedure’.
Some researchers fear the decision could deepen mistrust by fuelling speculation about political interference in science. Public health specialists have repeatedly warned that withholding data — even when the findings are reassuring — can damage confidence.
The controversy comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding vaccine policy in the United States. Health Secretary, Robert F. Kennedy Jr, has faced sustained criticism from medical organisations over his approach to immunisation policy and public messaging.
At present, most of the disputed FDA manuscripts have not been publicly released, limiting independent assessment of the underlying data and methodology.
Scientists involved in the projects have reportedly continued to push for publication.
Analysts say the dispute may ultimately reinforce calls for greater transparency within federal health institutions, particularly regarding decisions that affect public confidence in vaccination programmes – something that is desperately needed.
Why does the government need to hide studies if everything they said about safety and efficacy is true? Why all of the secrecy?
The answer to these questions is simple: The government lied, and people died.
