The most important ‘crisis’ of the next decade?
‘WATER BANKRUPTCY‘
The world has entered an unprecedented “era of global water bankruptcy”, according to a new report by the United Nations University (UNU).
The international body warns that humanity is running dangerously short of the freshwater resources that sustain life, food production, economies, and ecosystems.

The report, Global Water Bankruptcy: Living Beyond Our Hydrological Means in the Post-Crisis Era, states that traditional terms such as “water stress” and “water crisis” no longer capture the scale or permanence of the decline.
Instead, the world’s freshwater systems are now in a state akin to financial insolvency: ecosystems and water stores have been drawn down beyond sustainable limits, and many will not recover to historic levels without fundamental changes in how water is used.

Lead author Kaveh Madani, Director of the UNU Institute for Water, Environment and Health, said the term “water bankruptcy” better reflects the irreversible nature of trends.
In simple terms, societies have overspent their annual water “income” from rivers, rainfall and snow, and are depleting reserves stored in aquifers, glaciers, wetlands and soils.
The result, the report says, is lasting damage to natural water capital that cannot be restored within human planning horizons.
According to the paper, nearly three-quarters of the world’s population live in countries classed as “water insecure” or “critically insecure”, with around four billion people experiencing severe water scarcity for at least one month each year.
In addition, some 2.2 billion people lack safely managed drinking water, and 3.5 billion lack access to safely managed sanitation services.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the depletion of critical water stores.
Groundwater – a hidden reservoir that supplies roughly half of domestic use and more than 40 per cent of irrigation worldwide – is being pumped out faster than it can recharge.
About 70 per cent of the world’s major aquifers show long-term declines, contributing to land subsidence in major deltas and cities, increasing flood risk.
Meanwhile, more than half of the planet’s large lakes have shrunk since the early 1990s, and roughly 1,000,000,000 acres of natural wetlands have vanished in the process.
This doesn’t only just impact drinking water supplies, but also agriculture too.
These lakes consume roughly 70 per cent of worldwide freshwater withdrawals, with some 170 million hectares of irrigated cropland – about the combined size of France, Spain, Germany and Italy – under “high” or “very high” water stress.

The report also highlights the economic costs of water mismanagement.
Droughts and water scarcity, driven increasingly by human activities such as over-extraction, pollution and land degradation, now impose annual costs of around US $307 billion – more than the annual gross domestic product of many U.N member states.
Researchers argue that the current international water agenda – focused on incremental improvements in access to drinking water and sanitation – is no longer adequate.
Instead, they advocate a shift to what they describe as “bankruptcy management”: an approach that accepts the new hydrological reality and prioritises preventing further irreversible damage, balancing water rights with degraded carrying capacities, and transforming water-intensive sectors such as agriculture and industry.
One of the world’s most important resources is vanishing before our very eyes, while private corporations and governments keep the rest of it to themselves.
This could end up as a very serious crisis if allowed to continue – one that could fundamentally change the big power game in the near future.
A manufactured crisis, all by design, of course.
MANUFACTURED CRISIS
It is true that the world is facing freshwater problems on a mass scale, but this is not the whole picture when solely looking at it.
Like most predictions and forecasts by the United Nations, it is safe to assume that there is also some ‘funny business’ going on behind the scenes to ensure it continues this way.
In 2023, we warned that a manufactured water ‘crisis’ may be headed for us all, with predictions that two-thirds of the world’s population may be facing water shortages by 2050.

But here’s the thing: The water isn’t actually running out, just the water we are allowed.
Like recent stories of ‘food chain disruptions’, it isn’t the fact that there isn’t any fresh water to go around; quite the opposite, in fact. It is that the control and supply of this resource is a rigged game.
Most fresh water has been bought up and privatised by the world’s corporate behemoths.
We witnessed this at work during the 2019-20 bushfire season here in Australia, where vital water from Tamborine Mountain QLD was instead sent to Coca-Cola Amatil for bottling.

Across the world, other companies like Nestle continue to buy up massive water reserves.

The water is there, folks.
It is just not there for us, the people.
Foreigners now own, or have a significant share in, 4,503GL of Australian water entitlements, which is 11.3% of all entitlements across the country in 2023, the ATO says.

Not to mention even more water stress now added on by the extreme usage of artificial intelligence warehouses and facilities, estimated to consume between 312.5 billion and 764.6 billion litres of water annually as of late 2025.

Projections suggest this demand could reach 1.1 to 1.7 trillion gallons annually by 2027, driven by data centre cooling and electricity generation.
From all angles, fresh water is being polluted, stolen, monopolised, destroyed and poisoned, while the richest companies in the world sit on water reserves that could serve nations.
As this ‘crisis’ increases, it will only serve in the best interests of these characters, as they will be able to profit off heightened scarcities of the future.
Air and water rights will be a huge topic in the years to come, mark my words.
All part of the Agenda 2030 vision in action.
