Police say the Jewish community was targeted.
SHOOTING EVENT
A shooting event has just unfolded at Sydney’s Bondi Beach this evening evening, leaving what police say are multiple people dead and many more wounded — in what is being treating as a terrorist attack targeting the Jewish community.
The incident erupted just after 7pm local time during a Chanukah celebration known as Chanukah by the Sea, hosted by Chabad of Bondi, on the first night of the Jewish festival of lights.
Two gunmen can be seen opening fire on the crowded beachfront area, prompting panic and widespread chaos:
‘Matrix News’, which seems to be a photographer that provides images to mass media like the Daily Mail — and always seems to be right there when anything major occurs in this country — captured one of the reported gunmen’s face:
The official story is that at least 12 people have been confirmed dead, including one of the suspected shooters, while dozens more — including two police officers — have been hospitalised with serious injuries.
Authorities later arrested a second suspect, who remains in critical condition:
One man can be seen grappling with and eventually disarming one of the shooters on the beach, which many are calling a heroic act of selflessness. Authorities said this was a positive to see during such a chaotic scene:
NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon condemned the violence, describing the attack as a “disgraceful act of terror” and urging the community to remain calm and refrain from retaliation as investigations continue.
NSW Premier Chris Minns called the scenes “deeply distressing” and echoed the need for unity.
Anthony Albanese also denounced the attack as antisemitic terrorism, pledging national resolve against hatred and violence.
Leaders from various faith communities, including Muslim groups, swiftly condemned the shootings and offered solidarity with victims and their families.
THOUGHTS:
It is too early to give any type of substantial comment on this.
I think back to the ‘anti-semitic terrorist bombing’ that occurred earlier this year, which turned out to be a hoax.
This obviously seems a bit realer than that.
The true motive though, is not mine to guess right now.
Given the current tense political landscape against Israel, and cries out against ‘antisemitism’ from both the left and the right, this very well could be weaponised for more ‘hate speech laws’ and cracks downs on legitimate criticisms.
