FREE ENERGY.. WITH A CATCH

The Australian government, regardless of party throughout the years, have been big proponents of transitioning all citizens towards having smart meters in their homes.

We will explore the deeper agenda later, but first, let’s take a look at some news that has recently been announced; news indicating once again a slow, methodical creep.

Starting from July 2026, every Australian household will be eligible for three hours of free electricity each day. This new federal initiative, known as the Solar Sharer Program, is designed to “better utilise the nation’s abundant daytime solar power”. 

The new scheme aims to “help stabilise Australia’s electricity grid” by shifting demand to when solar generation is at its peak and wholesale prices regularly fall below zero.

Starting in South Australia, New South Wales and South-East Queensland, electricity retailers will be required to offer plans that include a three hour daily window of free power, typically in the late morning to early afternoon.

But here’s the catch.

You must have a smart meter installed to be qualified for this benefit.

Yes, there it is.

Smart meters will be required to cash in on the savings. Surprise, surprise.

Industry commentators say the Solar Sharer Program could help “nudge new habits”, encouraging households to think not only about how much power they use, but when.

Yes, ‘nudge’ people towards the smart agenda with more bribery, in other words.

And, as prices continue to sour, the ‘benefits’ of a smart meter will become more appealing, they say. Cripple the economy so much that people switch willingly – smart.

Indeed, beyond the surface level, this is a way to pray on the manufactured destruction of Australia with ‘smart solutions’ to the problems they caused.

There are also concerns some retailers could offset these ‘free hours’ with higher peak rates, though the government says the Australian Energy Regulator will regulate the Solar Sharer offer to ensure customers get a ‘fair deal’ outside of the free power period.

In other words, it will all be a scam anyway – while you have installed a smart meter.

The peak body for electricity retailers, the Australian Energy Council, said it was disappointed by the lack of consultation on the scheme, suggesting it adds a complex regulatory solution that delivers a customer outcome that is already being offered.

“This lack of consultation risks damaging industry confidence, as well as creating the potential for unintended consequences,” CEO Louisa Kinnear said.

Yes, that’s because it’s not actually about savings.

It’s all part of the grand vision for a country of smart meters and ‘smart homes’.

For you see, although smart meters are optional in many parts of the country at present, and even though there are ways to navigate – it potentially won’t always be this way.

The ‘powers that be’ have plans to make you accept smart meters without a choice.

THE MANDATE PUSH

The smart meter agenda is one I don’t see talked about often enough.

Consumers are growing increasingly concerned following a major push from energy retailers to implement smart meters across the country by 2030.

Much like the cashless society push, they will use statistics over the next half of the decade to justify further abandonment of the ‘old ways’.

‘Only a minority of people use the old boxes’, ‘we can’t support that system anymore’ – you know, the same old talking points we see with many topics, in fact.

This slow push with bribery via free electricity is another way to on-board as many people as they can voluntarily, so they have the ammo to make it mandatory.

In 2020, the Australian government provided $2.7 million to subsidise new advanced smart meters for households, businesses and schools in a trial to ‘monitor energy use’.

Bribery is nothing new, and the on-boarding has been done piece by piece.

Now, they are getting more serious. Earlier this year, letters were given to already opted-out residents describing “new upgrades” that will be coming to consumers in New South Wales, Queensland and South Australia from this year.

The letter stated that “…all customers will be required to upgrade to a smart meter”, raising concerns the push will become mandatory in the near future.

Canstar Blue Utilities editor, Tara Donnelly, recently told radio outlets that a major rollout is expected by 2030, as Australia’s energy retailers try to “deploy as many as possible”.

Last year, in a suite of reforms from the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC), it was revealed that all energy customers would receive a smart meter by 2030, along with “better information, protections and data”.

These final recommendations followed a review of smart meters nationwide, which found an accelerated rollout would “…help customers reduce their household bills in the short-term and provide savings for all energy users in the longer-term”.

The independent review has determined that speeding up the rollout of smart meters to 100 per cent of households by 2030 would “provide net benefits to the value of $507 million for national electricity market regions”, including NSW, QLD, the ACT and SA. 

“A number of Australians are already using smart meters to cut power bills, from those who have resources such as rooftop solar, to customers without solar who may be using smart meters to access cheaper tariffs” Chain Anna Collyer said.

They just need the justification, or story, to make the changes necessary now.

Let’s also not forget they say this plan to mandate smart meters across the board “places consumers at the forefront of the transition to net zero”.

“Smart meters present clear benefits for consumers and form a crucial link for the wider energy system, paving the way for significant advances necessary to reach net zero.”
