MASS BLACKOUT
In what is believed to be Europe’s largest ever power cut, tens of millions of people were left without electricity, while flights were grounded, trains halted and whole cities left without power, internet access or other vital services.
Power in Spain and Portugal has been mostly restored after a mass blackout paralysed most of the Iberian Peninsula, with Spain declaring a state of emergency.
The cause of the initial fault in the region’s electricity grid “is still being investigated”, and the EU has insisted that there were “no indications that it was a cyberattack”.
However, the elephant in the room cannot be ignored, and that is a heavy reliance on solar and wind energy.
Many believe this reliance made the region’s power grids more vulnerable to an outage of this scale, despite not getting a clear explanation of how it all happened from the government to this point.

Portuguese grid operator REN said one possible cause for the blackout may be a “very large oscillation in the electrical voltages” that started in Spain’s grid and spread to Portugal’s system.
However, experts said on Monday night that a reliance on net zero energy left Spain and Portugal vulnerable to the mass blackouts engulfing the region.
“This wasn’t a normal black out,” Daniel Lacalle, chief economist at Madrid-based investment company Tressis, told FOX Business. “Phones didn’t work; there was no 4G phone connection.” Additionally, some people were stuck in trains or elevators and could not access the internet.

Here is where things get more complicated. While the renewable energy sources did not disrupt power generation on their own, they were part of the mix that made it happen.
The background to the outage begins with the efforts to increase the use of renewables.
“There is a move across Europe to cut back fossil fuel and nuclear use,” Ben Habib, chairman of the Great British Political Action Committee, told FOX Business.
In 2011, Spain’s renewable energy fuelled 31% of its electricity, according to Statista data.
The share grew to 57% last year, meaning a significant drop in the combined use of fossil and nuclear fuels.
This was part of Spain’s goal to move closer to net-zero carbon emissions.

Additionally, Spain did get its net-zero wish earlier this year.
For the first time, they achieved that goal on April 16 across the entire grid.

However, that achievement was both a success and the problem.
In effect, it began a knock-on effect that would lead to the recent blackout.
Many say this is the first major case representing just how suicidal the push to net zero is.
A push that Australia is front-and-centre in the race to achieve.
AUSTRALIA AND NET ZERO
Australia is taking several steps to achieve net zero emissions, including “investing in renewable energy, electrifying industries, supporting low-carbon technologies, and promoting innovation”.
The government plans to ‘increase efficiency’ across various sectors and ‘support nature-based solutions’ for carbon sequestration.

1. Renewable Energy and Grid Modernisation:
- Australia is investing in renewable energy technologies like solar and wind power to “decarbonise the electricity grid”.
- The government is working to upgrade the electricity grid to “accommodate increased renewable energy generation”.

- Australia is supporting the development and deployment of “low-carbon technologies” in industries like steel, aluminium, and manufacturing.
- This includes exploring options like carbon capture and storage, hydrogen fuel, and low-carbon liquid fuels.
- The government is also incentivising businesses to adopt more “energy-efficient practices and technologies”.
3. Transportation Electrification:
- Australia is encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles and exploring alternative fuels like hydrogen for transportation.
- This includes reducing the price of electric vehicles and supporting infrastructure development for charging and refuelling.
- The government is also working to develop electric and hydrogen-powered aircrafts for the skies.

- Australia is promoting “nature-based solutions” for carbon sequestration, such as planting forests and “enhancing soil carbon storage”.

Unfortunately, in reality, the actual results don’t look quite the same:
Not only will these projects cripple our economy and way of life, but may also destroy the very natural world around us they are claiming to ‘protect’.
What happened in Spain and Portugal is a lesson to the world, including Australia.
